Benedictine Pulls Away in Fourth Quarter; Stops Wildcat Winning Streak at 11
The Culver-Stockton women's basketball team saw its 11-game winning streak snapped by Benedictine College Wednesday night at Ralph Nolan Gymnasium in Atchison, Kan.
The Wildcats, who hadn't lost since Dec. 11 against Columbia College, got off to a slow start in the first quarter, falling behind 8-0 before C-SC's Nevaiah Bell-Tenner netted the first Wildcats' points with 2:55 left in the first period.
The Ravens went on to lead 15-6 after the first quarter; however, the Wildcats controlled the first three minutes of the second period, scoring the first nine points of the period to tie the game at 15.
Benedictine outscored the Wildcats 15-9 over the final seven minutes of the half to take a 30-24 lead to the halftime locker room. Each team shot 44 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes with the Ravens making three more 3-pointers and three more free throws than the Wildcats.
In the second half, C-SC grabbed its only lead of the game at 35-34 on a Misora Nambara basket with 4:39 left in the third quarter. Nambara added a free throw 14 seconds later to give the Wildcats their biggest lead at 36-34 before a 3-pointer by Benedictine on the ensuing possession put the Ravens the lead for good.
C-SC pulled to within 47-45 entering the final quarter but the hosts outscored C-SC 24-12 in the final 10 minutes to cement the victory. Benedictine shot 61 percent from the field in the second half compared to just 42 percent for the Wildcats.
Bell-Tenner led a balanced scoring attack for the Wildcats with 13 points while Nambara added 12 markers and Allysa O'Connor chipped in with 11 points.
The Wildcats were out-rebounded 31-26 with Bell-Tenner and Nambara corralling four caroms each. Nambara dished out three assists while O'Connor registered six steals in the game.
The Wildcats won the turnover battle 17-15; however, the Ravens, who are tied for the conference lead with a 14-1 league record, took advantage of the miscues with a 14-12 edge on points off turnovers.
The Wildcats, now 16-7 overall and 10-5 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, returns home for another tough battle against 11th-ranked league co-leader MidAmerica Nazarene University at Charles Field House. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
