Late PK Leads to Women's Soccer Drawing with Saint Ambrose
A penalty kick converted by Saint Ambrose (Iowa) University in the final minute of regulation kept the Culver-Stockton College women's soccer team from winning its fifth straight game to to start the season.
Instead, the Wildcats fell to 4-0-1 overall after settling for a 2-2 tie at Ellison Poulton Stadium Wednesday night.
Leading 2-1, C-SC was under heavy pressure from the Bees in the final 10 minutes when a mad scramble in front of the Wildcat goal box led to a foul being called on the Wildcats inside the penalty area.
SAU's Kaitlyn Brunson buried the free kick with 57 seconds remaining in the game to turn a possible loss into an improbable draw.
The Wildcats had taken a 2-1 in the 64th minute when Alayna Chandler-Gutierrez gathered a long pass from Halle Jennex, sidestepped the Bees goalkeeper and scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
C-SC had taken a 1-0 in the first half when Savannah Stauffer drilled a free kick through the out-stretched arms of Bees goalkeeper Grace Kuchar.
However, SAU answered in the 32nd minute when Isabella Crawford picked up a rebound off a corner kick after C-SC Mackenzie Frizzell had made an initial save. Frizzell faced seven shots on goal and made five saves in the game.
The Wildcats were outshot 12-7 overall, including 5-2 in the second half. C-SC held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
C-SC, now 4-0-1 overall, is scheduled to play at Missouri Baptist University next Wednesday, Sept. 11, in St. Louis, Mo. Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m.
