Wildcats' Upset Bid Comes Up Short Against CMU
The Culver-Stockton College women's soccer team gave seventh-ranked and Heart of America Athletic Conference-leading Central Methodist University all it could handle Saturday night at Ellison Poulton Stadium.
The nationally-ranked Eagles scored twice in the first 26 minutes and that was the score at halftime as the visitors held a 6-4 shot advantage and appeared on their way to another league victory.
The Wildcats kept pressing in the second half and seemingly cut the lead in half in the 51st minute on a goal from Maggie Tuxhorn off a C-SC corner kick.
However, after discussion between the center official and the linesman, the play was deemed to be offside and the goal was taken off the scoreboard.
C-SC did cut the lead in half 17 minutes later when a ca Wildcat player was taken down in the penalty area.
Freshman Rian Moore drilled the ensuing penalty kick past Eagle goalkeeper Madison Priebe in the 68th minute to make it 2-1. It was Moore's first collegiate goal.
Both team had chances to either extend the lead or tie the game in the final 22 minutes and it was the Wildcats who had the best chance to get the equalizer.
On a re-start just inside CMU territory, Savannah Stauffer sent the ball into the Eagle penalty area. The ball found the foot of C-SC's Abby Coleman whose shot was destined for the upper corner just inside the near post with 1:14 to play
But Priebe came out of nowhere to make a diving save to keep the Eagles in the lead. The Wildcats did get a corner kick on the effort, but could nothing with it.
The Eagles outshot the Wildcats 12-10 in the match with both teams registering six shots each in the second half.
C-SC goalkeeper Mackenzie Frizzell made five saves between the pipes wheel Priebe was credited with six saves.
C-SC is scheduled to play a non-conference game this Wednesday, October 16, against Waldorf University at Ellison Poulton Stadium. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
