Alan Leyva Named Student-Athlete of the Month for January

Culver-Stockton College track and field standout Alan Leyva has been named the Primo's Pizza and Subs Student Athlete of the Month for January.

Leyva, a senior from Agua Prieta, Mexico (Central Christian College – Kan.) is a two-year member of the men's track and field team. A three event athlete, Leyva competes in the 60-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and the long jump for the Wildcats. Currently competing in the indoor season, Leyva has already qualified for the NAIA Indoor Championships in the long jump with a automatic qualifying mark of 23 feet, 5 ½ inches at the Saint Ambrose Invitational. That mark also smashed the previous school record of 23 feet, 4 inches which was set by Chaz Dial in 2009. Leyva has the ninth-best jump in the NAIA this season.

In addition, Leyva is also close to reaching provisional qualifying marks each of the sprints that he competes. In the 60-meter dash, his best mark is 6.97 seconds at the Dutch Holiday Classic. The 6.97 mark is the fifth-best time in the Heart of America Athletic Conference and just .05 seconds from the provisional mark. In the 200-meter dash, Leyva has set a time of 22.44 seconds at the Principia Relays and that is the second-best time in the Heart this season behind teammate Tyrin Holder's time of 22.07 seconds.

Off the track, Leyva is pursuing a degree in psychology. A transfer from Central Christian College in Kansas, Leyva has been named to the honor's list in two of his three semesters he has attended C-SC. Leyva was named to the Dean's List after the Fall 2018 semester, and the President's List after the Fall 2019 semester.

Among his activities on the Hill, Leyva is a member of the Psi Chi National Pschology Honor Society, secretary for the Student Government Association and the Psychology Club, and a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

Leyva is the fifth Primo's Student-Athlete of the Month for the 2019-20 school year. Brody Hassel (football) was named the September honoree while Shelby Winn (women's soccer) was named in October and Agustin Mosquera (men's soccer) was the November honoree. Thaddeus Newby (men's basketball) was honored in December.
