Hernandez, Velasco Named Student-Athletes of the Month for March

Culver-Stockton College women's lacrosse player Julieta Hernandez and football player Michael Velasco have been named the Primo's Pizza and Subs Student-Athletes of the Month for March.

Hernandez, a junior midfielder from Corona, Calif. (Santiago HS / California State-Fullerton), is a two-year starter for the Wildcat lacrosse team. Hernandez totaled seven goals and five assists for 12 points during the just completed season She was second on the team with 36 ground balls and 29 draw controls.

In her career, Hernandez has registered 10 goals and six assists for 16 points in 26 career games. She has 61 career groundballs and 51 career draw controls.

Hernandez, a nursing major, was named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete for the 2020-21 school year and was a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete this season. She has been named to President's List in the Fall of 2020 and the Spring of 2021, and the Provost List after the Fall 2021 semester.

Velasco, a junior placekicker from Corona, Calif. (Centennial HS / Missouri Valley College), was the top scorer for the Wildcat football team last fall, recording 84 total points. Velasco made 42 of his 43 extra point attempts and 14-for-20 on field goal attempts. He was 5-for-6 on kicks between 20-29 yards, 6-for-8 on kicks from 30-39 yards and 3-for 5 on kicks from 40-49 yards. Velasco was 0-for-1 1 from 50 yards or more. His longest field goal of the season was 49 yards.

Velasco, a criminal justice major, has completed four semesters at Culver-Stockton after transferring from Missouri Valley. He has been named to the Dean's four times starting in the Spring of 2020, Fall of 2020, Spring of 2021 and Fall 2021.

Hernandez and Velasco are the seventh pair of Primo's Student-Athletes of the Month for the 2021-22 school year, joining Jody Ellis (women's soccer) and Nolan Dreher (football) who were recognized in September, Sopheea Vomund and Dax Flowerree, who were named in October, and Montse Caparros (women's soccer) and Harrison Fey (men's soccer), who were lauded in November; and Taylor Green (women's basketball) and Josh French (men's cross country/track and field) who were acknowledged in December.

Also honored this year were Carlee Hummel (women's bowling) and David Hernandez (football) who were recognized in January, and Alyssa Baltimore (women's track and field) and Akeel Oxley (men's volleyball) were honored in February.

To be considered for the Primo's Student-Athlete of the Month, students must maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and must be at least a sophomore or complete one full year as a transfer student.
