Wildcat Nine Rallies Twice to Sweep, Win Series over William Penn

The Culver-Stockton baseball team rallied in both ends of Tuesday's doubleheader to claim a Heart of America Athletic Conference sweep and take the series three games to one over William Penn University.

The Wildcats, who walked off the Statesmen in game one of the series Monday afternoon, overcame a 5-0 deficit in game four of the series Tuesday before rallying to walk off with a 7-6 victory in eight innings.

In the first game, C-SC trailed 5-2 after four innings before plating five runs in the fifth to claim a 7-5 victory.

The Statesmen jumped out in front in the opener 3-0 with the help of a lead off hit, an error and a three-run homer.

The Wildcats closed to within 3-2 in the third inning when Keli'i Price doubled with two outs, Collin Hall walked, and Alex Harbin doubled them both home.

WPU extended the lead to 5-2 with two runs in the fourth inning but the Wildcats exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to stake claim to the victory.

Brandon Aragon started the uprising by reaching on an error. Andrew Fay and Price followed with singles to load the bases before Hall drilled a three-run double to right-center field to tie the game.

After Harbin struck out, Dax Flowerree singled through the hole at short to score courtesy runner Isaac Griffin-Akana with the go-ahead run.

Singles by Caden Power and Jordan Scott loaded the bases for the second time in the inning before Ryan Osso grounded out to shortstop for the second out as Flowerree crossed the plate.

Fay moved from right field to the mound to start the sixth inning and two hits and a walk while striking out four to earn the save for starter Josh McPheron.

McPheron hurled the first five innings, allowing 11 hits and five runs (four earned). He walked one and struck out one.

Five different players collected two hits each for the Wildcats, who had 11 hits overall. 

In the nightcap, the Statesmen plated five runs in the third inning to take a 5-0 before the Wildcats finally found their offense.

C-SC plated one run in the fourth when Flowerree led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single by Aragon.

In the fifth inning, the Wildcats added three more runs to close to with 5-4. Price singled to start the frame, and Jaison Andujar drilled a two-run home to bring the Wildcats to within 5-3. Flowerree then drew a walk, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Scott.

The Statesmen added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning, but the Wildcats answered with two more in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

Aragon started the inning with an infield singe ad moved to second on a walk to Fay. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice by Price and Aragon scored on a passed ball with Fay moving to third.

Hall followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Fay with the tying run.

Neither team scored in the seventh and Fay held the Statesmen scoreless in the eighth to set up the game-winning rally.

Again it was Aragon to get things started as he reached on an error by the WPU shortstop. A bunt single by Fay and a throwing error by the Statesmen pitcher put runners at first and third with no one out.

Fay took second base uncontested before Price hit into a fielder's choice as Aragon was cut down at the plate for the first out.

With Fay at third and Price at second, Hall hit a fly ball to center field that was caught, but Fay beat the throw home to score the winning run.

Fay earned the victory in relief to improve his record to 1-5 on the season. Nate Allen pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief for the Wildcats, allowing just one run and four hits in relief of starter Anthony Ribes.

The Wildcats, now 7-16 overall and 3-5 in the Heart, are slated to play a four-game series this Saturday and Sunday, March 25-26, at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa. Game time each day is set for 1 p.m.
