Wildcats Double the Fun; Walk Off Peru State Twice to Sweep Doubleheader

The Culver-Stockton College baseball team walked off Peru State College on both ends of doubleheader sweep over Bobcats Friday afternoon at Nichols Field.

After the Bobcats had rallied to tie the game with two runs in the top of the seventh, Andrew Fay hit a solo home run in the bottom of the frame to give the Wildcats a 5-4 victory in the first game.

In the nightcap, C-SC rallied for three runs to force extra innings in the seventh, had to rally with five runs in the eighth to overcome an 11-6 deficit, and then got a one out base loaded single from Brandon Aragon in the 11th to walk off with a 12-11 victory and complete the sweep of the twinbill.

In the opener, C-SC fell behind 2-0 in the fourth inning before taking a 4-2 lead in the fifth with a four-run burst.

Caden Power and Alex Harbin began the rally with each drawing back-to-back walks with one out. Ryan Osso followed with a single to load the bases before Fay delivered a two-run double to tie the game. 

Keli'i Price then followed with a single up the middle to score Osso and Fay to give the Wildcats a 4-2 lead.

The score stayed that way until the seventh when the Bobcats came up with a pair of runs to tie the game and keep the game alive. Fay ended it in the bottom of the inning.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats trailed 5-0 in the the fourth and 6-3 after five innings before getting a lifeline in the seventh inning.

With runners at second and third and the Wildcats down to their final out, Collin Hall struck out to end the game. However, the ball got by the PCS catcher and Hall reached first as Osso scored to make the score 6-4.

Jaison Andujar followed with a RBI single to drop the deficit to 6-5 and put courtesy runner Isaac Griffin-Akana at third. A passed ball with Jordan Scott at the plate allowed Griffin-Akana to score the tying run and send the game to extra innings.

Peru State exploded for five runs in the top of the eighth to take take an 11-6 lead; however the Wildcats weren't done with the comeback magic.

Power led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to make the score 11-7.

Aragon singled, but was forced out on a groundout by Osso. Fay drew a walk to put runners at second and third before Price ripped a two-run triple  to score both Osso and Fay to make the score 11-9.

Bryan Barreto was issued a walk to put runners at first and third before a pop up by Andujar was dropped. However, the Bobcats were able to force courtesy runner Griffin-Akana at second as Price scored to get C-SC to within 11-10.

Again the Wildcats were down to the final strike when Jordan Scott hit a bloop down the right field line. Andujar, running at the crack of the boat, was able to score the tying run all the way from first base.

Neither team was able to plate a run in the ninth or 10 inning, and Fay held the Bobcats scoreless in the 11th when t he Wildcats finally broke through.

Andujar began the winning rally with a leadoff double. Scott walked and Dax Flowerree was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out.

Powere popped out for the first out, but Aragon hit a hot shot at the drawn in infield and the first baseman was handcuffed and unable to come up with it as Andujar crossed home plate with the winning run.

Fay earned the victory in the second game to improve to 2-6 overall. He hurled the final three innings, allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out three.

The Wildcats and Bobcats are slated to conclude their four-game series Saturday with another doubleheader at Nichols Field. First pitch for the opening game is set for 1 p.m.
