Flowerree HR Gives Baseball First Game Victory; 'Cats Settle for Split on Day Two at Graceland

Dax Flowerree hit a towering three-run homer in the eighth inning to lift the Culver-Stockton baseball team to an 11-8 first game victory over Graceland University Tuesday afternoon in Lamoni, Iowa.

The Yellowjackets salvaged the final game of the series with a hard-fought 9-8 victory in the nightcap, keeping the Wildcats from sweeping the four-game set.

The Wildcats are currently 14-25 overall and 10-13 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. C-SC starts a four-game series Saturday, April 22, with a doubleheader at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa. The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.

In the opening contest, the Wildcats couldn't hold a 7-3 lead and watched as the Yellowjackets plated four runs in the fourth inning to tie the game and then take an 8-7 lead with a single run in the sixth.

C-SC tied the game in the top of the seventh when Brandon Aragon drew a bases loaded walk. The Wildcats threatened to take the lead; however pinch runner Eli Friend was thrown out at home plate on a flyball hit by Ryan Osso for a double play.

The Yellowjackets was set down in order by Andrew Fay in the bottom of the seventh setting the stage for Flowerree, who had two grand slams and 11 runs batted in in Monday's first game, a 27-5 Wildcat victory.

Flowerree finished the game by collecting three hits in five at-bats and three RBI. Fay and Collin Hall each had a hit and two RBIs, and Fay pitched the final two innings to earn the victory and improve his record to 3-6 on the year.

In the nightcap, Graceland jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings before the Wildcats plated six runs in the fourth inning to make it a game.

Osso and Fay each drove in a run with a bases loaded walk, and Keli'i Priced followed with a grand slam to account for the scoring in the inning.

The Yellowjackets tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-6 before the Wildcats rallied again for the umpteenth time in the four-game series.

Aragon was at first after a walk when Fay hit a popup near home plate. The Graceland catcher failed to make the play for an error and then compounded the error by throwing the ball into centerfield, allowing both Aragon and Fay to circle the bases and plate the tying runs.

Graceland answered with a one out single in the bottom of the inning which turned out to be the winning run.

C-SC was limited to four hits in the second game with Price collecting three of the four hits.
