Solo Homers by Fay, Power Help Wildcats Gain Split at Grand View

The Culver-Stockton baseball team began a weekend series against Grand View University with a split Saturday afternoon at Yaninich Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Wildcats plated single runs in the fifth and sixth inning to come away with a 4-2 victory in the opener. In game two, a seven-run fifth inning propelled the Vikings to a 12-10 victory to salvage a split.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game one when Alex Harbin doubled in a run and Andrew Fay squeezed home a run in the second inning.

Grand View answered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning and the scored stayed that way until C-SC's Fay hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and Caden Power connected for a solo home run in the sixth inning.

Nicolas Goebert hurled the final four innings in relief of Davin Meier to earn the victory. Goebert allowed just one hit in his four innings of work to improve to 2-1 on the season.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats built a 7-3 lead through 3 1/2 innings before the Vikings scored two in the bottom of the fourth and seven more in the fifth to take a 12-7 lead.

C-SC tried to rally late, getting a three-run home from Dax Flowerree in the sixth inning, but that was as close as the Wildcats would get.

Flowerree, who hit three home runs in a series at Graceland earlier in the week, hit two more home runs and had six runs batted in for the Wildcats in game two.

Harbin collected two hits, including a home run, and two RBI, while Jordan Scott also had two hits in the game.

C-SC and Grand View complete their four-game series on Sunday with another doubleheader in Des Moines, Iowa. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
