Wildcats Begin Final Weekend with DH Sweep over No. 20 Central Methodist

The Culver-Stockton baseball team began the final weekend of the regular season with a sweep over 20th-ranked Central Methodist University at Nichols Field in Canton, Mo.

The Wildcats came from behind in each game, overcoming a 2-0 deficit in the opener to claim a 3-2 victory before falling behind 4-0 in the nightcap and rallying for a 9-7 victory.

In the curtain-raiser, C-SC pitcher Davin Meier limited the Eagles to single runs in the second inning and the third inning to give his offense a chance to find itself.

That moment came in the fourth inning.

Collin Hall led off the frame with single and was replaced by courtesy runner Isaac Griffin-Akana. After Jordan Scott struck out, Dax Flowerree walked to put runners at first and second.

Caden Power struck out for the second out in the inning, but Jaison Andujar picked him up by hitting a sinking line drive to left field that left-fielder Khalil Thrasher couldn't come up with and ended up being a double, allowing Griffin-Akana to score.

Still trailing 2-1, Brandon Aragon then hit a hard shot to shortstop that was unable to be fielded for an error. Both Flowerree and Andujar scored to give the Wildcats the lead.

Meier took it from there, shutting out the league-leading Eagles over the final three innings to earn his second victory of the season.

Meier allowed a baserunner in both the fifth and sixth innings, and two runners in the seventh inning, but was able to get double plays in each frame to end the threat.

In game two, the Eagles jumped on Wildcat starter Stefan Stockwell for four runs in the first three innings.

C-SC totaled three hits through the first four innings before finally solving CMU starter Marcus Pritchard in the fifth inning.

Andujar and Bryan Barreto opened the inning with back-to-back singles. After Aragon popped out, Ryan Osso delivered an unexpected jolt with a three-run homer to give the Wildcats some momentum.

Trailing 4-3, Andrew Fay followed Osso with a single to chase Pritchard from the game.

Keli'i Price greeted reliever Alfred Ulloa with another single, and then Scott jumped all over an Ulloa pitch and drilled it over the left field fence for the second three-run homer of the inning.

The Eagles answered immediately with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game; however, the Wildcats had an answer of their own in the bottom of the inning.

Aragon started the uprising by reaching on a one out error and Osso singled to put runners at first and second.

Fay forced Osso at second base for the second out of the inning and then stole second to put two runners in scoring position.

Price drove in both runners with a single to left to regain the lead but then got aggressive to add a third run n the play.

Advancing to second on the throw home, Price caught the Eagles napping and raced over to third. The throw by pitcher Larry Riddle was wild and Price scored to increase the lead to 9-6.

The Eagles scored a run in the seventh off Fay, who was the fourth Wildcat pitcher, and had the tying runs on base when the game ended with  force out at second base.

Price finished the game with three hits in four at-bats, scored two runs and drove in two runs in the victory. Fay and Osso finished with two hits each.

Donovan Prost earned the victory with Fay picking up his fourth save of the season.

The Wildcats and Eagles are slated to conclude the four-game series and the regular season Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Nichols Field. C-SC will celebrate Senior Day with pregame festivities beginning at 12:30 p.m.
