Wildcat Nine Battles Back to Earn Victory, Tie against William Woods

The Culver-Stockton baseball team battle from behind the entire day and when it was all said and done the Wildcats had captured a weekend series victory over William Woods University in non-conference play.

The Wildcats, who split a doubleheader with the Owls Friday in Fulton, Mo., came from behind three different times in the opener Saturday before winning 8-7 in nine innings. In the nightcap, the Wildcats plated two runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 6-4 deficit and settle for a 6-6 tie when the game was called due to darkness after six innings to give the Wildcats the series win 2-1-1.

In the opener Saturday, WWU jumped to a 5-0 lead through 3 1/2 innings with the help of some shoddy Wildcat defense. C-SC committed five errors in the game.

The Wildcats go two back in the bottom of the fourth when Kannon Kirk was hit by a pitch and Jaison Andujar followed with a two-run homer, C-SC first hit of the game, to make is 5-2.

C-SC pulled to within 5-3 in the sixth inning when Andujar walked with two outs and Tristan Meny singled to the wall in right to score Andujar. Meny could have had a double but didn't run immediately after making contact.

The umpires called a balk on the Owls pitcher, but Meny swung and ripped the ball to the wall. Meny didn't run right away as the umpire appeared to call no pitch. But Andujar never stopped and scored while Meny eventually went to first base.

Still trailing by two in the seventh, the Wildcats loaded the bases with one out on back-to-back-to-back singles by Bryan Barreto, Noble Oxford and Wyatt Wright.

Ryan Osso drove in one run with a fielder's choice to make the score 5-4. Osso then moved to on a wild pitch and Kirk walked to load the bases for the second time in the inning.

Andujar followed with a bases-loaded walk to tie the game before Meny flied out to send the game to extra innings.

The Owls scored an unearned run in the eighth to regain the lead 6-5. However, the Wildcats' Jackson Day hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the inning to knot the game at 6-6.

WWU took a 7-6 lead in the ninth with yet another unearned run. But the Wildcats had an answer in the bottom of the inning.

With one out, Meny reached on on an error and Day singled to put the tying run and winning run on base.

With Kevin Mueller running for Day and Eli Friend running for Meny, Andrew Herrick hit into a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners with two out.

Barreto then reached on an error that scored Friend to tie the game. Oxford followed with base hit to left-center field to score Herrick with the winning run.

Stefan Stockwell earned the victory for the Wildcats with 2/3 innings of relief. It was his first victory in in three decisions.

The bullpen of Braden Taylor, Clay Street and Stockwell were brilliant in relief of starter Nicolas Goebert. That trio pitched five innings, allowing four hits and two unearned runs.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats trailed 4-2 after three innings and 6-4 after five innings before rallying for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

With the sun quickly setting, the Wildcats sensed it might be their last opportunity when they came to bat in the sixth.

Wright started the inning with a walk and Osso singled to put runners at first and second. Kirk reached on an error trying to sacrifice to load the bases with none out.

After Andujar struck out, Meny delivered a two-run single to tie the game and move the Kirk to third with the go-ahead run.

Day popped out for the second out and Herrick walked to load the baes again setting the stage for Barreto. However, Barreto grounded out to third to end the inning.

After a short discussion and sundown just minutes away, the decision was made by both teams to ed the game in a tie.

Meny went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in to lead the Wildcat attack. Kirk was 2-for-2 with a run batted in.

The Wildcats (3-12-1) is set to begin Heart of America Athletic Conference play next Saturday and Sunday, March 9-10, against Peru State College at Nichols Field. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. each day.
