Defensive Woes Leads to Peru Sweep in Heart Opener for Wildcats

The Culver-Stockton College baseball team committed 10 errors in a doubleheader loss to Peru State College Saturday afternoon at Nichols Field.

The Wildcats totaled five errors in a 4-3 loss to the Bobcats in the first game, and then added five more miscues to the total in an 8-0 loss in the nightcap of their Heart of America Athletic Conference opening twinbill.

C-SC drops to 3-14-1 overall and 0-2 in the Heart with the losses while the Bobcats improve to 6-13 overall and 3-3 in the league. The two teams conclude the four-game series Sunday, March 10, with another doubleheader at Nichols Field. Game time for the first game is set for 12 p.m.

In the opener, C-SC grabbed a 1-0 in the opening inning with two outs when Jaison Andujar hit a popup to short centerfield and the shortstop dropped it for a two-base error. Tristan Meny followed with a RBI single to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats quickly erased that lead in the top of the second inning by taking advantage of two C-SC miscues leading to a pair of unearned runs and a 2-1 lead.

The Wildcats tied the game in the bottom of the second on thanks to an error by Peru State. Andrew Herrick began the inning by reaching on an error. The Wildcats eventually loaded the bases with one out before Ryan Osso drove in Herrick with a sacrifice fly.

Peru State grabbed the lead with an unearned run in the fourth inning; however, Andujar tied the game a third time with a one-out solo home run in the fifth inning.

The game stayed that way until the seventh when the Bobcats got a leadoff triple and a fielder's choice to take plate a run and take a 4-3 lead.

Wyatt Wright led off the bottom of the seventh with a hit for the Wildcats and was sacrificed to second. However, Kannon Kirk popped out and Andujar flied out to end the game.

Anthony Ribes went 6 1/3 inning for the Wildcats, allowing five hits while striking out eight and walking two, to suffer the loss.

In the second game, the Bobcats scored two unearned runs in the first inning and three unearned runs in the sixth inning enroute to the shutout victory.

Cole Parkhill hurled five strong innings for the Wildcats, allowing five runs (3 earned) and six hits. Parkhill walked two and struck out six. Davin Meier pitched an inning and allowed three unearned runs, while Jarret Mink also hurled a perfect inning with two strikeouts.
