Wildcats Begin Weekend Series with Sweep at Missouri Valley

The Culver-Stockton College baseball team began a four-game Heart of America Athletic Conference series with a sweep of Missouri Valley College Saturday afternoon at Indian Foothills Park in Marshall, Mo.

Kannon Kirk went 3-for-3 and Ryan Osso drove in three runs as the Wildcats completed the sweep with an 11-4 victory in game two. Tristan Meny had three hits, including a big 3-run homer, as C-SC claimed the opener 6-4. 

The two teams are slated to conclude the four-game set Sunday Wirth another twinbill in Marshall. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.

In Saturday's opener the Wildcats trailed 1-0 when Bryan Barreto led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to tie the game at a run each.

The Vikings answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead but a big seventh inning by the Wildcats turned the momentum of the game and the day toward the Blue and White.

C-SC was down to its final out after a sacrifice fly by Osso scored Wyatt Wright, who had doubled to open the frame, to make the score 4-2.

Kirk followed with a single and moved up to second on a wild pitch. Jaison Andujar delivered a RBI single to make it 4-3, and then, after a pitching change, Jordan Scott walked in front of Meny.

Meny drilled his first Wildcat home run, a three-run homer over the centerfield fence, to give the Wildcats a 6-4 lead.

Anthony Ribes came out and tried to complete what he started; however, the Vikings didn't go quietly.

Ribes hit the leadoff batter and and allowed single to the next hitter to put the tying runs on base.

Stefan Stockwell relieved Ribes and promptly allowed a single to the first batter he faced to load the bases with none out.

Stockwell bared down and recorded the first out on a flyball to center. He then struck out the next two batters to save the game for Ribes and the Wildcats. It was Stockwell's first save of the season.

Ribes hurled six-plus innings, allowing seven hits and four runs. He walked two and struck out two in improving to 2-3 on the season.

In addition to Meny's three hits, Barreto added two hits as the Wildcats collected nine hits overall. 

In the second game, C-SC broke a scoreless tie in the third inning as Andujar hit a two-run homer and Meny added a RBI double to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.

The Wildcats added three more runs in the fourth inning on just two hits as Osso drop in a run with roundball, Kirk hit a sacrifice fly, and Osso scored on a wild pitch.

The Vikings cut the lead in half with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Wildcats added four more runs in the fifth to make it 10-3. 

Noble Oxford drove in the first run with a single, Osso followed with a two-run double, and Kirk added his second sacrifice fly of the game.

The Wildcats scored their final run in the seventh inning when Kirk reached on a single and scored when Andujar reached on an error.

In addition to Kirk's three hits, Wright, Oxford and and Barreto all registered two hits in the game as the Wildcats banged out 13 hits overall.

Davin Meier earned the victory in relief of Clayton Woods by hurling 3 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and one run. Meier struck out three and did not walk a batter.
