Woods Fires One-Hitter to Help Wildcats Earn Split

Clayton Woods pitched a one-hit, complete game shutout to help the Culver-Stockton College baseball team earn a split at William Penn University Thursday afternoon at Statesmen Ballpark in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

The Statesmen claimed an 8-5 victory in the first game of the four-game series that is scheduled to continue Saturday, March 23, with the final two games in Oskaloosa. First pitch Saturday is slated for 1 p.m.

Woods took a no-hitter to the seventh inning before allowing a two-out single to William Penn's Blair Speas. Woods threw 116 pitches in earning his second victory in five decisions. He walked three and struck out four. Wood got 12 outs by flyball and five groundball outs.

The Wildcats scored the only run they would need in the second inning when Tristan Meny doubled with one out. After Jackson Day lined out, Bryan Barreto reached on a single and advanced to second on an error by the shortstop, allowing Meny to score.

The Wildcats added three insurance runs the fourth inning when Day drilled a three-run homer to score Jordan Scott and Meny in front of him.

Three different players registered a pair of hits in the game for the Wildcats, who had nine total hits in the game. Meny, Kannon Kirk and Wyatt Wright all had two each for the winners.

In the opener, the Wildcats fell behind 8-0 before putting  a scare in to the Statesmen by plating five runs in the seventh inning.

C-SC loaded the bases with one out on singles by Meny, Day and Wright. Ryan Osso walked to score one run and another run scored when Kirk reached on an error. Jaison Andujar then cleared the bases with a three-run double to make things interesting before Scott popped out to end the game.
