Wildcats Escape Bases Loaded Jam to Salvage Final Game of Series

The Culver-Stockton College baseball team escaped a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the final inning to capture a 4-2 victory and salvage the final game of the four-game series with Baker University Sunday afternoon in Baldwin City, Kan.

The Wildcats, who lost the opener 5-4, took a 4-0 led in the series finale with single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Bryan Barreto drove home two of the runs for C-SC with a RBI double in the third inning and a solo home run in the fifth inning. Noble Oxford added a run batted in with a groundout in the fourth, and Jackson Day homered in the sixth inning.

Baker was shut out for six innings by Wildcat starter Cole Parkhill, who scattered five hits, walked two and struck out three before being lifted to start the seventh inning.

The hosts touched reliever Stefan Stockwell for two runs with a one out double and a two-out home run to cut the lead in half.

Stockwell allowed another double before being replaced by Carson Selk. Selk faced two batters and walked one and hit another to load the bases before being relieved by Braden Taylor.

With the winning run at first base, Taylor got Baker's Seth Brown to fly out to left field to earn his second save of the season.

Barreto, Kannon Kirk and Wyatt Wright collected two hits to lead the nine-hit Wildcat attack.

In the opener, Baker scored four times in the second inning en route winning its third straight game in the series.

The Wildcats closed to within 4-3 in the fourth inning on a two-run single by Barreto and a run batted in by Jaison Andujar when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Baker added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth and Kirk homered in the fifth to bring C-SC to within a run for the second time; however, the Wildcats couldn't get the equalizer over the final two innings.

The Wildcats registered eight hits in the game with Barreto going 3-for-4 and Ryan Osso collecting two hits in three at-bats.

C-SC, now 14-25-1 overall and 11-13 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference is scheduled to play its final home games of the 2024 season next Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21, against Park University. The first pitch each day at Nichols Field is slated for 1 p.m.
