Meny, Kirk Homer; Woods Pitches Wildcats to Split with Judson
Kannon Kirk and Tristan Meny both homered to help the Culver-Stockton College baseball team earn a split of its doubleheader with Judson (Ill.) Sunday afternoon with a 7-5 victory at Lloyd Hopkins Field in Alton, Ill. Judson held off the Wildcats in the opener 5-4.
Meny got the Wildcat off on the right foot with a old home run in the bottom of the first inning to give C-SC an early 1-0 lead.
The Eagles plated single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-1 lead, but the Wildcats tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Noble Oxford hit a fly ball to left field. Jeremiah Morris tried to go from second to third but was thrown out for the final out of the inning. However, Harry Oden had crossed home plate before the out was recorded.
After Judson re-gained the lead with two runs in the fifth inning to make it 4-2, C-SC answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer by Kirk and a run-scoring single by Morris to give the Wildcats the lead for good.
C-SC added an insurance run in the seventh inning on a single by Oxford, and then Bryan Barreto added another run with a single in the eighth inning.
Kirk finished the day with three hits and two RBI while Meny, Barreto, Morris and Oxford all had two hits and a RBI each.
Clayton Woods earned the victory on the mound with eight strong innings in which he scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out eight while allowing five runs (four earned). Charlie Stergos hurled the final inning to record the save.
In the opener, Judson plated five runs in the sixth and seventh innings break a 2-2 tie and then held off a C-SC rally in the bottom of the seventh to claim the victory.
The Wildcats got a RBI single from Jordan Scott and a sacrifice fly from Jaison Andujar to give C-SC a 2-0 lead after five innings.
However, the Eagles tied the game with a two-run sixth inning and then got a base-loaded double in the seventh to take a 5-2 lead.
C-SC tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh as Oden and Oxford led off the inning with backj-to-back singles. Both runners moved up on a fly ball out by Andujar, and Oden scored on a wild pitch with Oxford moving to third.
The Wildcats pulled within 5-4 as Oxford scored on a sacrifice fly by Meny, bit Kirk grounded out to end the game.
Davin Meier pitched six strong innings, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out five and not walking a batter.
The Wildcats and Eagles are slated to conclude their four-game series Monday, Feb. 24, with another doubleheader at Hopkins Field. The first pitch for the first game is set to begin at 11 a.m.
