Clayton Woods Pitches Wildcats to Split with CMU
Senior Clayton Woods pitched a six-hitter to help the Culver-Stockton baseball team gain a split with 23rd-ranked Central Methodist University Saturday afternoon at Nichols Field.
After committing three errors and losing 5-2 in the series opener, Woods shut down the high-powered Eagle offense on five singles and a double in a 4-3 victory in game two. Woods did not walk a batter and struck out two to improve to 2-2 on the season. Woods allowed two runs in the first and a run in the fourth inning.
Trailing 2-0 after an inning, the Wildcats used all of the offensive ammunition they had in the third inning. C-SC recorded all six hits it had in the game in the third frame, scoring all four of its runs.
Dallas Slayton opened the frame with an infield single and advanced to second on an error. After Jaison Andujar flied out, Tristan Meny delivered a RBI single to cut the lead in half at 2-1.
Kannon Kirk flew out for the second out and the rally seemed over, but four straight two-out singles, the last by Harry Oden, produced three more runs and a 4-2 Wildcat lead.
In the first game, the Wildcats were their own worst enemy, committing three errors and a passed ball.
C-SC trailed 3-0 before closing to within 3-2 in the third inning uprising and it was Slayton who opened the gates.
Slayton reached on a one out single and scampered to third on a single by Noble Oxford. With runners at the corners, Meny popped out for the second out before Kirk drilled a two-run triple to center field to get C-SC with 3-2.
That would be as close as the Wildcats would get in the opener as the Eagles scored two insurance runs in the seventh inning, taking advantage of a botched double play attempt.
Davin Meier suffered the loss on the mound despite pitching six strong innings, allowing five hits. Meier struck out seven and walked two.
C-SC and CMU are scheduled to complete the weekend series with another doubleheader Sunday, March 16, at Nichols Field. First pitch for the first game is set for 1 p.m.
