Baseball Uses Big Inning to Secure Split at Mount Mercy
The Culver-Stockton baseball team used a seven-run fourth inning in gam two to help secure a split of a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader at Mount Mercy University Saturday afternoon in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Wildcats, who lost the first game 6-4, trailed 3-0 in game two when the Wildcats sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven times in the fourth inning en route to a 9-5 victory.
Ryan Osso delivered the biggest hit of the fourth inning, drilling a bases-loaded double to left to clear the bases. Jaison Andujar added two singles and two runs batted in in the decisive fourth innings, while Tristan Meny had a RBI double and Bryan Barreto a RBI single in the inning.
Andujar registered three hits in the game, including a two-run double in the sixth inning, and finished with four RBI.
Clayton Woods earned the victory on the mound, hurling 5 2/3 innings while scattering nine hits and allowing five runs. He walked two and struck out to improve 3-2 on the season. Carson Selk relieved Woods and pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two.
In the first game, the Wildcats opened with a strong statement in the opening inning, plating three runs. Noble Oxford and Kannon Kirk began the frame with singles before Andujar reached on a three-base error to center field, scoring both Oxford and Kirk. Meny followed with a RBI single and the Wildcats led 3-0.
But the Mustangs answered with five runs in the second inning off of C-SC starter Davin Meier. Meier had to the one poor inning as he pitched six innings, allowing six hits and six runs. He walked three and struck out five.
The Wildcat offense was limited to five hits overall with three of those hits coming in the opening frame. C-SC was issued two walks and struck out twice.
C-SC and Mount Mercy are slated to conclude the four-game series Sunday with another doubleheader in Cedar Rapids. First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m.
