Wildcats Ride the Arms of Meier, Woods to Sweep Graceland
The Culver-Stockton College baseball team rode the arms of senior pitchers Davin Meier and Clayton Woods in sweeping a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader from Graceland University Saturday afternoon at Nichols Field.
Meier got the Wildcats off on the right foot in the series opener, pitching 5 1/3 innings of no-hit ball before settling for a two hitter in a 1-0 victory over the Yellowjackets. Meier walked three and struck out six in earning his first victory of the year.
Not to be outdone, Woods scattered seven hits and allowed just one earned run as the Wildcats easily defeated the visitors 11-2 in the nightcap. Woods, who improved to 4-2 this season, walked one and struck out six.
The reason Meier had to be so good for C-SC in the opening game is because Graceland's Jacob Abernathy held the C-SC offense in check.
Abernathy held the Wildcats to three hits overall through the first six innings to keep the game scoreless.
However, in the seventh inning, the Wildcats finally broke through to plate the winning run.
Bryan Barreto started the winning rally with a one out double off Abernathy. Harry Oden followed with an infield single to send courtesy runner Eli Friend to third and put runners at the corners.
After a pitching change and an intentional walk to Jeremiah Morris to load the bases, C-SC's Ryan Osso slapped a single to right field to score Friend with the winning run, giving the Wildcats the game one victory.
No heroics were needed in the second game as the Wildcats plated four runs in t he first inning and never looked back in point a nine-run victory int he nightcap.
Oden led the Wildcat 15-hit attack by going 4-for-4 with three runs batted in. Tristan Meny added a 3-for-3 day, including a solo home run, with four runs scored, and two RBI. Jaison Andujar was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, and Morris also collected two hits and had a run batted in.
The Wildcats and Graceland are slated to conclude the four-game series on Tuesday, April 1, with another doubleheader at Nichols Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
