Meier's Two Hitter Helps Wildcats Split at Benedictine
Davin Meier pitched a two-hitter to help the Culver-Stockton baseball team inch closer to a postseason berth with a 3-1 victory over Benedictine College Friday afternoon at Laughlin Field in Atchison, Kan.
Benedictine banged out 12 hits to pick up a 10-4 victory in the nightcap to gain a split of the Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader.
The Wildcats can clinch a playoff berth with one victory Saturday against the Ravens in the second doubleheader of the for-game series, or either a loss by Clarke and Peru State.
In the opener, Meier allowed just a single and a double in the third inning when the Ravens plated their only run of the game. Meier had to pitch around seven walks, but struck out for to earn his second victory of the season.
C-SC scored an unearned run in the opening inning to grab a 1-0 lead. Noble Oxford walked to lead off the game, advanced to second on a wild pitch and went to third on an error by the catcher.
Kannon Kirk then grounded out to shortstop as the Oxford crossed home plate for the first run of the game.
Benedictine tied the game in the second inning, but the Wildcats took advantage of another Raven error in the fourth inning to regain the lead.
Tristan Meny doubled to lead off the inning and then, after a groundout, moved to third on a wild pitch. Bryan Barreto struck out, but Jeremiah Morris reached on an error, allowing Meny to score the go-ahead run.
C-SC added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Barreto was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Morris and Harry Oden struck out, but courtesy runner Eli Friend was able to advance to second on a wld pitch after the Oden strike out.
Ryan Osso followed with a two-out, RBI single to centerfield to score Friend and give the Wildcats a two-run advantage.
A pair of walks and a wild pitch put the tying runs in scoring position for the Ravens in the sixth inning with two outs; however, Meier was able to get out the inning to preserve the lead.
Benedictine jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings in game two before the Wildcats plated three runs int he firth to make things interesting.
After Jordan Scott singled and Barreto doubled to put runners at second and third, Morris drilled a three-run homer to bring C-SC to within 4-3.
However, the Ravens exploded for six runs int he bottom of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 10-3 and the Wildcat could only answer with a RBI single by Osso in the seventh inning to account for the final score.
Oden and Barreto led the Wildcat offense with two hits each. Three C-SC pitchers were touched for 10 runs on 12 hits. C-SC hurlers struck out four while issuing seven walks in the game.
The Wildcats and Ravens are slated to conclude the regular season with another doubleheader Saturday, April 26, in Atchison, Kan. The first game is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
