Football Never Finds Traction in Home Loss to No. 2 Grand View

The Culver-Stockton football team fell behind 31-0 in the first half and never threatened No. 2 Grand View University in a 46-21 Heart of America Athletic Conference North Division loss Saturday afternoon at Ellison Poulton Stadium.

The Vikings rolled up 441 total yards of offense in claiming their 39th consecutive regular season victory and the eighth straight victory over the Wildcats. Grand View registered 259 yards rushing and 182 yards passing in the game.

The Wildcats trailed 40-0 in the fourth quarter before Isaiah Eppinger caught touchdown passes on consecutive drives to give the C-SC offense some life. The first was a 26-yard reception from Jase Orndorff with 12:11 left in the game, and the second was a nine-yard grab from Houston Swan with 4:04 to play. Eppinger finished with three receptions for 49 yards.

The Wildcats struggled all day running the ball, tabulating just 81 yards on the ground. However, Demarquez Johnson came alive late with a 74-yard burst to give him exactly 100 yards rushing in the game.

Orndorff threw for 202 yards on 24 of 37 accuracy and one touchdown. His main target was Mason Hackman who had five catches for 71 yards, and Dominic Herrera, who had three receptions for 33 yards.

The defense also chipped in on the scoring as Jett Smith picked up a fumble and rumbled 19 yards for a score. C-SC won the turnover battle on the day with two fumble recoveries and David Hernandez's sixth interception of the year. The Wildcats had just one miscue, an interception by Orndorff which was his first since Sept. 24.

The Wildcats, now 5-5 overall and 3-1 in the Heart North, are scheduled to conclude the 2002 campaign this Saturday, Nov. 12, with a road game at Peru State College in Peru, Neb. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
