Missouri Valley Hands Wildcats Second Straight Road Loss

The Culver-Stockton College football team dropped its second straight road game to start the season, falling to Missouri Valley College 28-7 Saturday night at Gregg-Mitchell Field in Marshall, Mo.

After amassing 384 total offensive yards in a 28-23 season-opening loss to Mount Marty (S.D.) last week, the Wildcats were limited to 268 total yards against the Vikings, who were playing their season opener. C-SC was held to just 60 yards rushing on 20 carries after gaining 248 yards on the ground with 49 carries.

Unable to move the ball offensively in the first quarter, the Wildcats gave Missouri Valley good field position at the MVC 44-yard line after a nine-yard punt. The Vikings took advantage, taking a 7-0 lead on a 26-yard touchdown pass that ended a five-play, 56-yard drive.

C-SC started with back up Houston Swan under center in place of starter Brock Nellor but Swan only played two series before the Wildcats turned to freshman Carson Vandello.

Vandello went three-and-out on his first series, but after the defense forced a punt to get the ball back, Vandello found a rhythm and moved the offense on 12-play drive from the C-SC 20 to the MVC 22. However, the drive came up empty when the Wildcats turned the ball over on downs.

Using the momentum of a defensive stop, the Vikings marched 78 yards on 13 plays ending with a four-yard run to give the hosts a 14-0 lead.  The drive took eight minutes, four seconds to complete.

Needing a spark, the Wildcats got a shot of adrenaline from Gavin Gardner who returned the ensuing kickoff 39 yards giving the Wildcats good field position at their own 41-yard line.

Vandello completed a 33-yard pass and run to Tyler Danzey and a six-yard pass to Slayton Ochoa to move the Wildcats to the MVC 20-yard line.

After an incompletion, Gardner caught an 11-yard pass to the Viking nine-yard line. A loss of one yard on a running play and an incomplete pass brought third and goal when Vandello found Ochoa with a short pass at the five-yard line.

Ochoa avoided one defender and then beat a second defender to the end zone for his first touchdown of the season to cut the deficit to 14-7 heading to the halftime locker room.

In the second half, Vandello and the Wildcats were under constant pressure from the Viking defense. MVC didn't allow the Wildcats to breathe. C-SC went three-and-out on four of their eight second half possessions and gained just 75 total yards in the second 30 minutes of the game.

Vandello finished the game 20 of 44 for 204 yards in his first collegiate game. He was intercepted one time. Ochoa was the main receiver with six catches for 50 yards, while Gardner led the team 60 yards on five receptions.

C-SC is scheduled to play its home opener next Saturday, Sept. 9, against Central Methodist University at Ellison Poulton Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. The Eagles opened their season with a 48-7 home loss to Graceland in Fayette, Mo.
