Boulanger Kicks Wildcats to First Victory of the Season

Ethan Boulanger kicked a 25-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Culver-Stockton College football team to a 33-30 victory over Missouri Baptist University Saturday night at Ellison Poulton Stadium.

The winning kick came after the Wildcat defense held the Spartans to a field goal attempt with the first possession of the overtime period.

C-SC's Sonny Jenkins broke through the line and blocked the Jonah Cox 36-yard kick attempt, giving the Wildcats a chance to win the game with the next score.

Starting from the MBU 25, the Wildcats got a pair of runs from Tyler Danzey totaling 11 yards to the Spartan 14-ayrd line. Danzey had a big game for the Wildcats, garnering 112 yards on the ground on 24 carries.

A mishandled snap on the next play nearly led to disaster for the Wildcats, but quarterback Brock Nellor fell on the loose ball to keep possession. An incomplete pass followed before Danzey ripped off a nine-yard run to the eight-yard line, setting the stage for Boulanger.

Boulanger, who had an extra-point blocked earlier in the game, drilled right down the middle to give the Wildcats their first victory of the season and improve their record to 1-3 overall. The Spartans, playing their first season in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, dropped to 0-3.

Missouri Baptist led 10-0 after one quarter before a pair of two-yard touchdown runs by Nellor in the second quarter gave the Wildcats a 14-10 advantage. However, the Spartans answered with a late half touchdown to take a 17-14 lead at halftime.

C-SC opened the second half with Nellor finding Freddy Edwards with a 36-yard touchdown pass on the opening possession of the second half to help the Wildcats regain the lead at 20-17.

The Wildcat defense forced a three-and-out in the Spartans' initial possession of the second half, and the Wildcats took advantage as Nellor found Edwards for a 23-yard scoring strike to make it 27-17 with nine minutes left in the third quarter.

The Spartans closed to within 27-24 with a touchdown late in the third quarter, and then, Cox drilled a 25-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to knot the game at 27.

C-SC answered with a 16-play, 62-yard drive that ended when Boulanger banged a 33-yard field goal attempt off the left upright, but the ball dropped through to give the Wildcats a 30-27 lead with 5:21 left in the game.

Missouri Baptist took the ensuing kickoff and marched 73 yards to the Wildcat two-yard line before settling for a 19-yard field goal by Cox as time expired in regulation.

Nellor, with two touchdowns rushing and two touchdowns passing, finished the game with 198 yards passing on 17 of 29 accuracy. He also added 16 yards rushing.

Edwards finished with two catches for 59 yards while Slayton Ochoa hauled in a game-best seven receptions for 52 yards.

C-SC is slated to travel to Atchison, Kan., next Saturday, Sept. 23, to face 20th-ranked Benedictine College at Larry Wilcox Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. The Ravens improved to 2-2 on the season with a 62-28 victory over Peru State.
