Football 'Cats Fall Behind Early, Lose to Baker at Home

Playing from behind is not the Culver-Stockton College's football team's strong suit and the Wildcats found themselves chasing its opponent once again Saturday afternoon.

Baker University scored on its first two possessions of the game en route to a 38-7 victory over the Wildcats at Ellison Poulton Stadium.

The visitors took the opening kickoff and marched 65 yards in just five plays before connecting on a touchdown pass and a 7-0 lead.

Baker forced a punt on the ensuing possession and then drove 77 yards in 11 plays and kicked a field goal to put C-SC in a 10-0 hole.

The Wildcats , who haven't scored in the first quarter all season, forced Baker to punt on its third possession. However, quarterback Brock Nellor was intercepted by Baker's Jaleel Laffitte and he returned it 26 yards for a touchdown and a 17-0 lead.

C-SC's defense stiffened for the rest of the half, forcing Baker to punt on its final three possessions of the half. However the Wildcat offense struggled to get anything going, totaling 58 total yards at the intermission.

After each team punted to start the third quarter, the Wildcats finally found some offensive success.

On C-SC's second possession of the half, Nellor found receiver Freddy Edwards open in the middle of the field and Edwards streaked to the Baker six-yard line for an 81-yard gain.

After a Baker timeout, Nellor connected with Jordan Beban in the back corner of the end zone for a Wildcat touchdown.

However, Baker crushed any momentum the Wildcat's might have gained by scoring on the first play after the kickoff, a 74-yard run by Rahsaan Graves.

That run took the sails out of the Wildcats and Baker added two more touchdowns, including a second interception return, to account for the final score and earn its eighth straight victory over the Wildcats.

The Wildcat offense was held under 200 total yards for the second consecutive week, gaining 180 yards. C-SC registered 28 yards rushing and 152 yards through the air.

Punter Walroux Venter continues to shine, punting the ball 10 times and averaging 46.2 yards per punt. Four of his 10 punts were at least 50 yards or more and he placed four punts inside the 20.

The Wildcats, who head to their bye with a 1-5 overall record, returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 12, against second-ranked Grand View University in the Heart of America Athletic Conference North Division opener. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. in Des Moines, Iowa.
