Wildcats Lose to Clarke in Defensive Battle

Clarke University scored on a 25-yard touchdown run with 3:54 left in the third quarter to break a 7-7 tie and went on to defeat the Culver-Stockton football team 14-7 Saturday afternoon at Dalzell Field in Dubuque, Iowa.

Clarke opened the scoring in the first quarter when Dominic Pedroza caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Kenyon Williams on the Pride's second offensive possession of the game.

The Wildcats, who haven't scored in the first quarter this season, took the ensuing kickoff and appeared to be in good position to eliminate that statistic.

After moving inside the Clarke 10-yard line, running back Tyler Danzey took a handoff and was looking to score when he was hit short of the goal line. The ball came out and rolled out the side of the end zone resulting in a touchback for the Pride, wasting a 16-play, seven-minute drive in the process.

The C-SC defense forced a punt on the ensuing possession and this time the Wildcat offense redeemed itself with an 11-play, 75-yard drive that finished with Danzey scoring on a 14-yard run to tie the game in the second quarter.

Neither team did much offensively in the game until the Pride was able to score the tie-breaking touchdown in the third quarter.

C-SC had one last chance to tie the game, taking over at their own 19-yard line with 1:19 to play in the game.

A seven-yard reception to Bobby Ezzard and a 10-yard reception to Slayton Ochoa from Brock Nellor moved C-SC to its own 34-yard line.

Three incomplete passes followed before a 14-yard reception to Ochoa moved the chains to the C-SC 48-yard line with time running down.

Two more incomplete passes followed, but an 11-yard reception to Ochoa gave the Wildcats a first down at the Clarke 41 with 1.2 seconds left on the clock. After a false start by the Wildcats, Nellor completed a five-yard pass to Ezzard on the ensuing play, but he was tackled immediately as the game ended.

For the first time since the season-opening game at Mount Marty (S.D.), the Wildcats outgained their opponent in total offensive yardage. The Wildcats recorded 299 yards of offense while limiting the Pride to 266 total yards.

Nellor finished the game with 170 yards passing on 19 of 46 accuracy. His main target was Ochoa, who hauled in eight catches for 88 yards. Danzey led all Wildcat rushers with 51 yards on 15 carries.

Defensively, Kendall Fowler led the charge with a team-high eight tackles, including a sack. The Wildcats recorded four sacks in the game with Chris Rogers tallying two sacks.

The Wildcats return home next Saturday, Oct. 28, and will celebrate their homecoming with a game against William Penn University at Ellison Poulton Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m
