Wildcats Fall to Missouri Baptist in OT After Building Big Lead

Missouri Baptist University overcame a 37-15 deficit in the final 10 minutes of the game to post a 44-37 overtime victory over the Culver-Stockton College football team Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field in St. Louis.

It appeared the Wildcats would claim its first victory of the year after Demarion Cobb plunged in from two yards out with 9:30 to play for his second touchdown of the game to give the Wildcats a 22-point advantage.

However, the Spartans took less than a minute march 65 yards and score a touchdown and two-point conversion to cut the lead to 37-23 with 8:32 to play.

MBU forced a Wildcat punt on the ensuing possession and Spartan return man Joseph White raced 64 yards for a touchdown. The extra point mad it 37-30 C-SC with 6:06 to play.

C-SC tried to kill the clock on the following possession and took nearly three minutes on the drive before the Spartan defense forced a Wildcat punt to get the ball back.

The Spartans moved 72 yards on seven plays and notched the tying touchdown with 1:21 left in the game.

C-SC had a chance to win the game in regulation, putting together a two-minute drive that pushed ball to the MBU 13-yard line to set up a possible game-winning field goal by Ethan Boulanger on the game's final play.

However, after timeouts by each team, the Spartans blocked the game-winning 30-yard attempt as time expired to send the game to overtime.

C-SC won the toss and chose to go on defense first and the Spartans needed just two plays to score a touchdown and grab their first lead of the game.

The Wildcats had their opportunity to score but two running plays and a pass play lost five yards setting up a 4th and 15 at the 30-yard line. Drake Day's pass to the end zone on the fourth down fell incomplete and the Spartans had completed the comeback.

Despite the loss, the Wildcats turned in their best offensive performance of the season, accumulating over 200 yards rushing and passing and finishing with 470 total yards. C-SC, which ran 90 plays in the game, rushed for 208 yards on 55 attempts, and had 262 yards passing on 17 completions.

Cobb registered 109 yards rushing and a career-high 28 carries and scored two touchdowns to end the C-SC rushing attack. Nicholas Jarrett also had two touchdowns rushing and finished with 40 yards on 16 attempts.

Day threw for 262 yards on 17 of 35 accuracy and one touchdown, which went to Kyle Dixon on 29-yard strike in the the first half. Dixon ended the day with six receptions for 124 yards, his second 100-yard receiving game of the season.

The Wildcats (0-3) will try to get that first victory next week when they travel Baldwin City, Kan., to face nationally-ranked Baker University. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
