Tough Start Keeps Wildcats Winless on the Season
The Culver-Stockton College football team played 12th-ranked Benedictine College pretty even for three quarters Saturday afternoon at Ellison Poulton Stadium.
Unfortunately for the home team, the Ravens dominated the opening quarter and led 35-0 after 15 minutes en route to a 56-21 victory over the Wildcats.
Benedictine needed just 10 plays over its first two possessions to jump out to a 14-0 lead. A scoop and score fumble return on a sack on the first play of the Wildcats' third possession made it 21-0 less than eight minutes into the game.
The Raven would add two more touchdowns before the end of the quarter and then a sixth first half touchdown early in the second quarter before the Wildcats finally found their footing.
A 39-yard diving touchdown catch by Kyle Dixon with 49 seconds left in the first half got C-SC its first points of the game. The touchdown was set up by a 27-yard run by quarterback Drake Day.
The Ravens added a touchdown in the third quarter and another in the fourth quarter to build their lead to 56-7.
The Wildcats twice got inside the Raven red zone in the third quarter but failed to put any points on the scoreboard, turning the ball over on downs each time.
C-SC scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the first coming on an acrobatic catch by Eli Edmonds in the back corner of the end zone. Edmonds hauled in Day's pass from two yards out, tapping his toe just inbounds for the score.
On Benedictine's ensuing possession, the Wildcats forced a Ravens punt and Maddox Fraley blocked the kick. Jake Richards recovered the loose ball at the Raven one-yard line.
After a couple of running plays failed to gain the necessary yardage, Day bulled his way in on third down for the final touchdown of the day.
Day finished as the Wildcats' leading rusher with 53 yards on 12 carries. His net total was hindered by being sacked six time in the game. Demarion Cobb rushed 14 times for 47 yards.
Day also there for 155 yards on 11 of 25 accuracy and was interception free for the second straight game. His main target was Edmonds, who had four catches for 58 yards. Dixon recorded two receptions for 49 yards.
The Wildcats (0-6) will enjoy a bye next Saturday before resuming the season on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Heart of America Athletic Conference North Division newcomer Saint Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. Kickoff that day is slated for 12 p.m.
