Cobb Rushes for a Career-High in Loss to Graceland
The Culver-Stockton College football team simply had trouble stopping the high-powered Graceland University offense in a 55-27 homecoming loss to the Yellowjackets Saturday afternoon at Ellison Poulton Stadium.
The Yellowjackets scored on their first offensive play of the game and didn't stop until they had amassed 697 total yards of offense, including 491 passing yards.
It wasn't like the Wildcats struggled offensively.
C-SC registered 393 total yards of offense, including a season-high 228 yards rushing in the game. Senior running back Demarion Cobb set his career high rushing for 166 yards on 20 carries, averaging 8.3 yards per carry.
Graceland opened the game with a 63-yard touchdown pass on the opening offense play of the game to start what turned out to be a frantic first quarter.
The Wildcats nearly answered on their first offensive play when Cobb broke loose for a 73-yard run to the Yellowjacket eight-yard line. Cobb gained seven more yards to the one yard line before quarterback Drake Day plunged on from a yard out to tie the game ay 7-7.
The Yellowjackets needed just two plays to score a second time as a 69-yard run to cap a two-play, 78-yard drive and give the game three touchdowns six seconds shy of two minutes gone in the contest.
C-SC went the ground game and marched 75 yards on 10 plays with Cobb scoring from two yards out to tithe game again at 14.
However, the Yellowjackets scored twice more in the quarter, one after a Wildcat interception, to lead 27-14 at the end of the opening period.
The game settled in after the first period with each team scoring a touchdown in the second quarter for a 34-20 lead fro Graceland at the intermission.
C-SC's only score of the quarter was a 21-yard pass from Day to Kyle Dixon on the first play of the second quarter. It was Dixon's ninth touchdown overall and eighth receiving touchdown.
The Yellowjackets owned the second half, scoring 21 straight points before the Wildcats' Nicholas Jarrett scampered 25 yards with 24 seconds left in the game for his third touchdown of the year. Jarrett ended the day with 79 yards rushing on 12 attempts, averaging 6.6 yards per rush.
Day finished the game with 17 completions on 30 attempts for 165 yards and one touchdown. Dixon was his main target with eight receptions for 84 yards.
The Wildcats (1-7 overall, 1-2 in the Heart) are scheduled to play the next two weeks on the road beginning next Saturday, Nov. 2, at Peru State College in Peru, Neb. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
