Wildcats Rally in Second Half; Beat Columbia in Overtime

The Culver-Stockton men's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final three minutes of regulation and then pulled away in overtime to post an 86-75 victory over Columbia College on the first night of the Fairfield Inn Classic at Charles Field House.

After the Cougars' Collin Parker drained two free throws with 2:34 to play in regulation to give the visitors a 67-57 advantage, the Wildcats outscored Columbia 12-2 to force overtime tied 69-69.

The comeback started with a pair of free throws from Javon Modester before a 3-pointer by Seth Larson with 1:21 to play pulled C-SC within 67-62. A turnover by Columbia and two more free throws by  Modester closed the gap to 67-64 with 64 seconds left in regulation.

The Cougars netted a pair of free throws to stop the bleeding momentarily; however, a 3-pointer from CaRondis Harris-Anderson brought C-SC to within 69-67 with 10 seconds left. Harris-Anderson then stole the inbounds pass and was fouled with eight ticks remaining. He made both free throws to tie the game at 69.

A last-ditch effort by the Cougars was stopped when Robert Fry II stole a pass from Columbia's Tony Burks and his desperation heave was long as the buzzer sounded.

C-SC won the tip to start overtime and Fry found Jim King for an easy lay-in to give C-SC its first lead since it was 4-3.

Columbia split a pair of free throws on its first possession and the Wildcats countered with a basket by Seth Larson to extend the lead to 73-70.

The Cougars answered with a field goal of their own, but Fry scored to make it 75-72. After Columbia split another pair of free throws to get to within 75-73, Harris-Anderson nailed a jumper from the corner and a steal by Larson and short jumper by King gave C-SC a 79-73 lead with 2:13 to play.

The Cougars answered with a basket out of a timeout, but the Wildcats drained nine of 12 free throws while the Cougars missed their final four shots over the final one minute, 44 seconds to seal the victory.

C-SC put five players in double figures with Fry leading the way with 22 points. Harris-Anderson added 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Modester recorded 15 points and three assists. Larson came off the bench to net 13 markers and King added 11 points.

The Wildcats forced 21 turnovers in the game leading to a 25-4 edge of points off turnovers. C-SC had 11 steals in the game with Modester pilfering three of them. The Wildcats were out-rebounded 46-33 overall, but only led to a 9-8 advantage for Columbia on second chance points.

C-SC (2-1) concludes the Fairfield Inn Classic tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 12, against East-West University at Charles Field House. Tip off is set for 3 p.m. The Phantoms opened the classic with a 77-55 loss to Iowa Wesleyan. The Tigers face Columbia at 1 p.m.
