Modester, Blaize Lift Wildcat to First Victory of 2023

Javon Modester hit the go-ahead basket with 22 seconds left remaining in regulation to help the Culver-Stockton men's basketball team end a three-game losing streak with a 71-68 victory over Mount Mercy University Saturday afternoon at Charles Field House.

The Wildcats, who fell behind 12-0 to start the game only to claw their way back to within 34-28 at the intermission, shot 58 percent in the second half to help with the come-from-behind victory.

The second half didn't start much better than the first half as the Mustangs scored six of the first 11 points in the half to take a 40-33 lead. However, C-SC reeled off a 19-2 run to take a 52-42 lead on a jumper by Modester with 10:39 to play in the game.

Mount Mercy answered with an 11-0 run to take a 53-52 lead, but a technical foul on the Mustangs for flopping allowed Jalen Blaize to make a free throw to tie the game with 7:18 to play.

Neither team held more than a three-point lead the remainder of regulation with the Wildcats holding a 61-58 lead a steal and layup by Seth Larson with 3:36 left only to see the Mustangs' Ryan Bartley tied the game with a trey and Riley Pankey give the visitors a 64-61 lead with a 3-pointer with 1:52 to play.

Larson tied the game with a long-range jumper on the ensuing Wildcat possession and the lead see-sawed back-in-forth until Bartley gave the Mustangs a 68-67 lead with 41 seconds left.

After a timeout, Modester dribbled down and then hit a turn-around jumper from the free throw line for the go-ahead basket.

After a Mount Mercy timeout with 16 seconds left, Pankey missed a 3-point attempt and CaRondis Harris-Anderson grabbed the rebound. After a couple of fouls, the Wildcats ran their inbound play to perfection as Modester hit a streaking Harris-Anderson for a thunderous dunk with five-tenths of a second left that in essence ended the game.

Modester finished with a monster game of 20 points, on 8-of-11 shooting, seven rebounds, five assists and six steals. The Wildcats forced 16 turnovers overall, leading to 14 points.

Blaize matched Modester's scoring output in points and assists with 20 and five, respectively. Jim King added 11 points while Larson contributed nine markers. Ryan Moore led the Wildcats on the glass with nine caroms.

C-SC, now 7-9 overall and 3-8 in the conference, is slated to play this Monday, Jan. 16, at Graceland University. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Morden Center in Lamoni, Iowa.
