Late Free Throws Sink Wildcats

Carlos Hines made two free throws with 3.2 seconds remaining to lift Peru State College to a 77-75 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory over the Culver-Stockton men's basketball team Saturday afternoon at Charles Field House.

The Wildcats trailed 75-73 when Ryan Moore was fouled in the backcourt with 28 seconds left in the game. Moore missed the front end of the 1-and-1 and the Bobcats grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled.

After a second foul by C-SC, the Wildcats's Gabe Cox forced a turnover on the ensuing inbounds play and laid in the tying bucket with 22 seconds remaining.

Peru State brought the ball up the floor, and with time winding down, attempted a 3-pointer from the right of the top of the key. Cox brushed by of defense and was called for a foul.

Hines made the first two free throws before missing the third attempt. Moore grabbed the rebound and go the ball to CaRondis Harris-Anderson. Harris-Anderson's half-court desperation attempt banged off the backboard and the rim as time expired.

In the first half, C-SC trailed 31-26 with 3:30 left in the opening 20 minutes when they sprinted to the end of the half with an 11-0 run to take a 37-31 lead to the locker room.

The Wildcats shot 50 percent from the field for the second straight game, connecting on 32 of their 63 field goal attempts overall.

The difference in the game came at the foul line where the Bobcats outscored the hosts 10-2 from the stripe. Peru shot 14 free throws while the Wildcats attempted just four free tosses.

Seth Larson scored 23 points to lead the Wildcat attack. Larson was 11-for-14 from the field with one 3-pointer. C-SC, which played without leading scorer Robert Fry II due to a death in his family, also got 12 markers from Connor Davis off the bench.

The loss drops the Wildcats to 8-11 overall and 6-9 in the Heart. C-SC is currently in the eighth and final playoff spot, just a half-game ahead of Park University and Benedictine College.

GAME NOTES:

  • The Wildcats were out-rebounded for the 13th time this season Saturday. Peru held a 41-29 edge on the glass. C-SC is 3-10 in those games.
  • The Wildcats committed a season-low nine personal fouls against the Bobcats. The nine fouls by Peru State was also a season-low by a Wildcat opponent.
  • Larson scored in double figures for the 29th time in his career. Larson eclipsed the 20-point mark of the fifth time in his career.
  • Peru State made 13 3-pointers in the game, matching the highest number of treys by a C-SC opponent this season. Graceland also drained 13 treys on December 6th.
  • The two free throws and four free throw attempts by the Wildcats were both season lows.
  • The Wildcats are scheduled to play Park University in a makeup game this Monday, Jan. 29, at Charles Field House. The game was originally slated to be played Saturday, Jan. 13, but was postponed due to inclement weather. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
