Walters-Whitaker Drills Late Trey to Lift Wildcats over Benedictine

Tai Walters-Whitaker drained a 3-pointer with 21 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Culver-Stockton men's basketball team to its third straight victory with a 74-72 decision over Benedictine College Saturday afternoon at Charles Field House.

Trailing 71-70, the Ravens got a layup from Gino Corridori with 36 seconds left and he was fouled on the play. Corridori missed the free throw and the Wildcats grabbed the rebound and advanced it half court before calling timeout with 33 seconds left.

After the timeout, the Wildcats go the ball to Robert Fry II who drove to his left drawing the defense to him. Fry, feeling the defense collapse, dished the ball to Walters-Whitaker who calmly drained his only 3-pointer of the game for a 74-72 lead

The Raven go two chances to either tie or win the game.

The first came with roughly four seconds left when Brycen Larue missed a game-winning 3-point attempt from the top of the key.

After a scramble for the rebound, the ball went out of bounds off a Wildcat player, giveng Benedictine possession with just sixth-tenths of second left. The Ravens threw a lob to Braden Belt in the middle of the lane, but his shot attempt fell short as the buzzer sounded.

The Wildcats shot 46.4 percent from the field, including 50 percent in the second half, while limiting the Ravens to 42 percent shooting. C-SC led 31-27 at the intermission before being outscored by the visitors 45-43 in the second half.

Fry led the Wildcats in scoring with a game-high 20 points. It was the third straight game Fry has scored 20 or more points. Fry was 7-for-10 from the field, including 3-for-5 from deep, but only 3-for-8 from the foul line.

Three other Wildcat players reached double figures with Walters-Whitaker leading that group with 12 markers. Seth Larson and CaRondis Harris-Anderson each chipped in with 10 points each.

The Wildcats, now 11-11 overall and 9-9 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, is scheduled to play at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.

GAME NOTES:

  • The victory snapped a 13-game losing streak to the Ravens. The last victory over Benedictine was on Nov. 21, 2015.
  • The Wildcats even their record to 3-3 in games decided by five points or less.
  • The Wildcats are 9-5 when scoring 70 or more points.
  • The Wildcats out-rebounded the Ravens 37-35 and are now 7-1 when registering more rebounds than the opponent.
  • Fry has scored 20 or more points five times this season and 17 times in his career.
