Late Basket Spoils Wildcats' Home Opener
A basket by Ottawa University with 1.8 seconds remaining in the game helped spoil the home opener for the Culver-Stockton College men's basketball team with a 79-7 victory Wednesday night at Charles Field House.
The Wildcats, trailing 77-74 with under a minute to play, had tied the game with 31.9 seconds on a conventional 3-point play by Connor Davis, who had driven to the basket and was fouled. He made the free throw to finish with a game-high 23 points.
Ottawa advanced the ball to half-court where it called time out with 26.9 seconds left before running the clock down to work a shot for Deondre Buggage, who hit a jumper from near the free throw line for his only basket of the second half. He scored 19 points in the first 20 minutes and finished with 22 points overall.
C-SC's last second desperation shot by Keashon Petty from 75 feet was short and off the mark to drop the Wildcats to 0-2 on the young season. Ottawa improved to 4-1 overall.
The Wildcats trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half before a mad rally in the final 10 minutes made a game of it. C-SC outscored the Braves 29-14 over the final nine minutes culminating in Davis' three-point play.
C-SC forced 15 Brave turnovers while limiting its miscues to 10 in the game. The Wildcats outscored Ottawa 14-11 on turnovers. Ottawa had a 32-28 edge in points in the paint, while the Wildcats had a 10-2 edge in fast break points.
Ryan Stevenson was the only other Wildcat to reach double figures, finishing with 13 points. Nick Spannaus and Rode Dinnar contributed nine points and a team-best six rebounds each. Petty registered a team-high six assists and four steals off the bench.
The Wildcats return to action this Saturday, Nov. 9, with a road game at Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis, Mo. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
