Men's Basketball Suffers Another Close Loss

The Culver-Stockton College men's basketball team rallied to force overtime before falling to Health Sciences and Pharmacy (UHSP) 85-80 in double overtime Saturday afternoon at UHSP Gymnasium in St.Louis, Mo.

The Wildcats trailed 63-60 near the end of regulation when Ryan Stevenson drained a 3-pointer with 4.4 seconds remaining to tie the game and send it to an extra five minutes.

In the first overtime, C-SC took its first lead since it was 9-6 in the first half on a trey by Stevenson to start the extra period to make it 66-63 C-SC.

The Eutectics scored nine of next 11 points to go up 72-68 before a layup by Nick Spannaus and an offensive rebound and basket by Connor Davis tied the game with 54 seconds left.

UHSP regained the lead on a basket and had a chance to go up three with a foul with 32 seconds remaining bu they missed the free throw giving the Wildcats an opportunity.

On the ensuing possession, Davis found Alex Jackson with a sweet pass for a layup to tie the game with 15 seconds remaining. UHSP had two chances to score in the final seconds but failed to do so to send the game to a second extra period.

In the second overtime, neither team scored for the first 2:14 of the period before the Eutectics went on a 5-0 run to take a 79-74 lead.

Davis stopped the bleeding momentarily with two free throws to bring C-SC within 79-76 and the defense forced a miss on the other end to give C-SC another chance to tie with a trey.

Roee Dinner missed the game-tying 3-point attempt; however, David grabbed the rebound and hit a short fall away from the right baseline to make it a one point game with 1:09 to play.

The Eutectics drained a 3-pointer to make it an 82-78 game with 37 seconds left, and Jackson was called for an offensive foul with 27 ticks left to give UHSP the ball back. 

UHSP split a pair of free throws to up the lead to 83-78 game but Spannaus scored with 15 seconds to bring it back to 83-80.

C-SC was forced foul and the Eutectics made two free throws with 10 seconds left  to seal the victory.

David finished the game with a career-high 29 points, going 9 of 15 from the field and 11-for-13 from the free throw line. He also grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds. Stevenson added 19 points before fouling out early in the first overtime. 

The Wildcats (0-3) are scheduled to host Missouri Baptist University this Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Charles Field House. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
