Joyner's Late Goal Lifts Wildcats to First Heart Victory

Culver-Stockton's CJ Joyner scored in the 80th minute to lift the Wildcats to their first Heart of America Athletic Conference victory with a 2-1 decision over Evangel University Saturday night.

With the game tied 1-1, the Wildcats were putting on pressure when the forced a corner kick and Adam Fowler sent a shot just to the right of the goal.

C-SC quickly regained possession after the goal kick and marched down the field where Ethan Wilkinson-Felgate hit a laser that banged off the cross bar. 

The ball caromed back the middle of the penalty area and Joyner was there to pounce on the rebound and beat Valor goalkeeper Anthony Morales for his second goal of the season.

The Wildcats, who were outshot 15-12 in the match, struck first in the first half when Austin Jones notched his second goal of the season on a free kick in the 18th minute.

Evangel, who is still winless in Heart play, recorded the equalizer in the 62nd minute on a free kick by Elias Lairmore.

C-SC goalkeeper David Gavriliak was called upon to make three saves in each half too finish with six in the game. The cornerkicks were even at three each, while the Wildcats held a 16-14 edge in fouls.

The Wildcats, now 5-5-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the Heart, are scheduled to host Clarke University this Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Poulton Stadium. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
