Men's Soccer Scurries Late; Falls to Clarke 2-1

Clarke University withstood a late charge by the Culver-Stockton men's soccer team in the final two minutes and held on to post a 2-1 heart of America Athletic Conference victory Wednesday night at Ellison Poulton Stadium.

Trailing since the 26th minute of the first half, the Wildcats had two opportunities late in the game to get the equalizer. The first came off the head of Ruben Reinertsen at the 88:57 mark that was headed for the goal but cleared by the Pride defense.

C-SC then forced a corner kick in the final minute; however, Baldo Moreno's shot attempts sailed wide right before a desperate attempt to put one final offensive surge together ended with the clock running out.

Clarke opened the scoring in the fifth minute when a Clarke player was taken down in the penalty area and was awarded a penalty kick. Joao Fernandez converted the free kick to give the Pride a 1-0 advantage.

C-SC netted the equalizer in the 12th minute when CJ Joyner picked up a loose ball and drilled his third goal of the year past Fernando Contreras to make it a 1-1 game.

The Pride answered in the 26th minute on a Jonathan Velasquez goal that was assisted by Jose Gomez. It was Velasquez's third goal of the season.

Clarke outshot the hosts 17-9 in the game, including 10-3 in the second half. C-SC had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks, while the Pride had a 12-7 edge in fouls.

C-SC, now 5-6-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the Heart, is slated to play a non-conference match against Iowa Wesleyan University this Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Poulton Stadium. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
