Men's Soccer Settles for Tie with Fontbonne

The Culver-Stockton College men's soccer team fell behind 2-0 early, took a 3-2 lead midway through the second half, and eventually settled for a 3-3 draw with Fontbonne University Wednesday night at Ellison Poulton Stadium.

The Griffins, who lost to C-SC 4-0 last year in St. Louis, netted a goal in the eighth minute and the 23rd minute to jump out a quick lead.

The Wildcats cut the lead in half with just under a minute remaining in the opening period and it came from an unlikely source.

David Gavriliak, normally the starting goalkeeper, had the night off between the pipes and was subbed in at forward late in the first half. Gavriliak took a lead pass from Benjamin Doncel in the middle of the field and beat Fontbonne goalkeeper Dominic Haggard for his first goal as a Wildcat.

In the second half, the Wildcats grabbed the lead with the help of a pair of penalty kicks 20 seconds apart. Ruben Reinertsen delivered the equalizer in the 64th minute for his second goal of the season, and then Adam Naim gave the Wildcats the lead in the 65th minute after Austin Jones drew a penalty in the penalty area.

Fontbonne ended any hopes of a 2-0 start for the Wildcats, tying the game in the 80th minute as a crossing pass from the right sideline somehow found its way through a sea of legs and to the foot of Ethan Bromaghim who re-directed into the net.

The Wildcats outshot the Griffins in each half and ended with an 18-14 edge in the category; however, Fontbonne held a 9-4 advantage in penalty kicks.

Jack Gibson started in goal for the Wildcats and recorded six saves in the game, including four in the second half.

The Wildcats, now 1-0-1 overall, will next be in action next Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Hannibal-LaGrange University in Hannibal, Mo. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. at Blackwell Field.
