Wildcats Throw Scare into No. 14 Columbia College Before Settling for Tie

The Culver-Stockton men's soccer team put a scare into No. 14 Columbia College Friday night before eventually settling for a 2-2 tie at R Marvin Owens Field in Columbia, Mo.

The Wildcats are undefeated after four matches with a season-opening victory followed by three consecutive ties to start the season. C-SC returns to action next Wednesday, Sept. 6, when it hosts William Woods (Mo.) at Ellison Poulton Stadium. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.

Friday's match with the 14th-ranked Cougars figured to be the toughest test to date for the Wildcats. Columbia opened its season Tuesday with a 1-0 victory at No. 7 Missouri Valley College.

After playing for nearly 38 minutes in the first half without any score, each team found the back of the net in a span of two minutes.

Columbia struck first with a goal in the 38th minute; however, the Wildcats answered the quickly as Riccardo Fornasari netted an unassisted tally in the 40th minute to tie the game.

C-SC, which was outshot 22-9 in the game, grabbed a a 2-1 lead win the 70th minute when Ruben Reinertsen took a pass from Austin Jones and scored his team-leading third goal of the season.

The Wildcats were under constant pressure in the final 20 minutes, but goalkeeper David Gavriliak was able to make 13 saves in the match.

Unfortunately for Gavriliak and the Wildcats, the Cougars scored the tying goal after a throw in deep in C-SC's end.

A mad scramble in the penalty area ensued and the ball squirted to Columbia's Luke Sowerby who teed it up and put the ball in the net with 4:57 to play

Each team put offensive pressure on the other's respective goalkeepers in the final five minutes but was unable to break the deadlock.
