Wildcats Rally to Take Second Half Lead, Settle for Fourth Straight Draw

A wild second half resulted in the Culver-Stockton men's soccer team drawing with William Woods University 3-3 Wednesday night at Ellison Poulton Stadium in Canton, Mo.

A sluggish start by the Wildcats allowed the Owls to grab a 2-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of the game.

William Woods dominated the first half, out-shooting the hosts 12-3 in the first 45 minutes of action. The Owls put five of those shots on goal while C-SC managed just one shot on target.

The frenzied second half started with the Wildcats cutting the lead in half when Austin Jones floated a pass towards the six-yard box and found Ruben Reinertsen, who headed it past the Owls goalkeeper of the his fourth tally of the season.

C-SC and David Gavriliak got the equalizer in the the 73rd minute when Benjamin Doncel sent a pass ahead to Gavriliak in the middle of the field and Gavriliak slid it past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net for his second goal the year.

It appeared C-SC might steal victory moments later when a CJ Joyner corner kick in the 87th minute somehow found Reinertsen for his second of the game and fifth of the year to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead.

However, a frantic offensive attack by the Owls in the final minute of play produced several good scoring opportunities with C-SC goalkeeper Jack Gibson making several saves.

William Woods persisted and a shot rebounded out to the Owls' Omar Murillo who was able to get a solid shot that found the back of the net to tie the game with 25 seconds left in the match.

Gibson, who saw his record go to 0-0-3 this season, faced 12 shots on target, making nine saves.

The final shot total showed the Owls holding a 25-15 advantage, including a 13-12 edge in the second half. The Wildcats recorded nine corner kicks to the Owls' six in the match.

C-SC (1-0-4) is scheduled to play its final non-conference match of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The Wildcats are slated to host Harris-Stowe State University at Poulton Stadium. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
