Men's Soccer Can't Sustain Fast Start in Home Loss to Baker

The Culver-Stockton College men's soccer team could not sustain a two-goal lead and fell to Baker University 4-2 in a Heart of America Athletic Conference match at Ellison Poulton Stadium Saturday night.

An undermanned Wildcat team missing several starters to season-ending injuries, jumped out to a 2-0 first half lead over the visitors from Baldwin City Kan.

Ruben Reinertsen notched his ninth goal of the season in the 13th minute when Riccardo Fornasari sent a cross to the front of the Baker goal and Reinertsen punched it past the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.

The score stayed that way until the 42nd minute when Baldo Moreno, making his season debut, picked up the ball on the right sideline, dribbled past a Baker defender and beat the goalkeeper from a tough angle for his first goal of the year.

Baker cut that two-goal lead in half in the 44th minute when a throw-in deep in C-SC territory caromed off several players in front of the C-SC goal and Baker's Sahai Arwo was able to sneak past C-SC goalkeeper David Gavriliak.

Both teams recorded seven shots in the first half and each team attempted four corner kicks.

Baker turned up the heat in the second half, out-shooting the Wildcats 7-2 in the final 45 minutes of the match. Of those seven shots, four were on goal and three found the back of the net.

Baker tied the game in the 60th minute before a pair of penalty kicks, one in the 72nd minute that gave Baker the lead, and the other in the 82nd minute, gave the visitors an insurance goal.

Gavriliak made five saves in the game with four of those saves coming in the first half.

C-SC, now 2-4-4 overall and 0-4-0 in the Heart, is back in action this Wednesday, Oct. 4, against Mount Mercy University at Poulton Stadium. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
