Johnson, Savage Set School Marks at Heart Outdoor Championships
The Culver-Stockton men's track and field team registered 17 points and finished 13th at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Senior Verlyn Johnson helped account for 13 of the 17 points scored by the Wildcats. Johnson placed placed fourth in the 200-meter dash, fifth in the 100-meter dash and he was the anchor on the 4x100 relay team that placed fifth overall.
Reid Savage accounted for the other four points for C-SC with a fifth place finish in the 110-meter hurdles while also serving as the leadoff for the 4x100 relay team.
Johnson set a school record in the 200-meter final, recording a time of 21.58 seconds, surpassing the previous mark of 21.80 seconds by Tyrin Holder at the 2021 William Penn Relays.
In the 100-yard dash, Johnson was slightly slower than his qualifying time 10.79 in the final, crossing the line in 10.83 seconds. The 10.79 mark is the fourth best in school history.
The 4x100 relay team of Savage, Johnson, Drew Mallett and Anthony Havens, Jr., completed the circuit in 42.24 seconds, which was the fourth best time in school history.
Savage set a school record in the preliminary race of the 110 hurdles on Friday, qualifying with a time of 15.45 seconds, and breaking the previous mark of 15.49 seconds by Jordan Bucklew in 2009. In the final, Savage recorded a time of 15.66 seconds to finish fifth overall.
