Men's Track and Field Prepare for Heart Championships at Viking Classic

The Culver-Stockton men's track and field team tuned up for the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships next week by registering 12 top eight finishes and five personal best marks at the Grand View Viking Classic Friday in Des Moines, Iowa.

Leading the way for the Wildcats was the javelin throwers who finished first, second and fourth in the standings.

Drew Mallatt, who set a personal best mark Thursday in the javelin at the Drake Relays with a throw of 144 feet, 2 inches, topped that mark Friday in winning the javelin event by throwing the spear 144 feet, 8 inches.

Teammates Kendall Fowler and Mason Humphrey finished second and fourth, respectively in the event. Fowler has a toss of 132 feet, 7 inches, while Humphrey tossed the spear 117 feet, 5 inches.

Jabez Rivers placed second in the 400-meter hurdles, third in the 110-meter hurdles and fourth in the 200-meter dash during the day. Rivers completed the 400 hurdles in a time of 56.76 seconds while In the 110 hurdles, Rivers recorded a time of 15.80 seconds. In the win the 200 Rivers set a personal record with a time of 23.39 seconds.

Chase Lake and Kenny Tucker each set personal best marks in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Lake finished second in the a time of 11:30.96, while Tucker was third in a time of 11:31.38.

Tyheim Merriel was the other athlete to set a personal best mark, doing it in the 400-meter dash. Merriel finished eighth overall in a time of 56.58 seconds.

C-SC finished second and fourth in the 5000-meter run with Kile Dowd placing second in a time of 17:41.65. Gannon McNamee placed fourth overall with a time of 17:49.49.

Finally, Kevin Bryant placed eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.42 seconds.

The Wildcats are scheduled to compete in the conference championships ext Friday and Saturday, May 3-4, at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan.
