Wildcat Netters Beat Central Christian; Fall to St. Ambrose in Triangular

The Culver-Stockton men's volleyball ended an 11-match losing streak with a three-set victory over Central Christian (Kan.) College in the final game of the Culver-Stockton Triangular at Charles Field House Friday night.

The Wildcats started slowly in the opening set before coming on strong over the final two sets to post a 25-17, 25-8, 25-14 victory over the Tigers, who entered the match winless in 19 tries C-SC opened the day with a 25-22, 25-23, 25-19 loss to Saint Ambrose University.

Against Central Christian, the Wildcats' main attack was their serve, recording a season-high 22 service aces in the match. Owen Randle led the onslaught with nine aces while Malachi Gnade and Jacob Todd totaled five aces each.

Todd was also unstoppable at the net with a match-high nine kills on 10 attempts for a .900 hitting percentage. Zach Kowalewicz registered six kills and Gnade totaled four kills. Randle garnered 14 set assists.

In the earlier match with Saint Ambrose, the Wildcats could contain Bees middle hitter Nick Fox who recorded a match-high 16 kills and a .696 hitting percentage. Saint Ambrose seemingly went to Fox every time the Bees needed a point.

Kowalewicz and Gnade did their part keep the Wildcats in the match, combining for 19 of the 35 total kills for the Wildcats. Kowalewicz finished with 10 kills and Gnade had nine terminations. Todd finished with six kills.

Randle and Matt Reese totaled 33 set assists in the match with Reese coming off the bench to post 20 of those helpers. 

The Wildcats (3-18) begins the second half of Heart of America Athletic Conference play this Tuesday, March 19, against Missouri Valley College. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Charles Field House.
