Softball Sweeps Briar Cliff Behind Schneider's Bat, Roseberry's Arm

The Culver-Stockton softball began its home schedule with a doubleheader sweep over Briar Cliff University Sunday afternoon at Himsl Field.

The Wildcats scored two runs in the sixth and a another in the event to overcome a 4-2 deficit and defeat the Chargers 5-4 in the opener. In the nightcap, C-SC rode the right arm of Emma Roseberry to a 5-1 victory.

Roseberry, who was making her season debut after offseason surgery, allowed two hits and struck out 12 to earn the victory. Her only blemishes were a home run in the second inning and a one-single in the seventh.

Roseberry got offensive support from Rosa Anquiano who was 2-for-4 with a home run, while Myah Briese was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and a RBI. Selina Guzman also collected two hits for the winners.

In the opener, Baylee Schneider provided the offense punch for the Wildcats with three hits and three runs batted in. She homered in the second inning, singled in a run in the fourth inning to give C-SC a 2-0 lead.

The Chargers cut the lead in half in the fifth inning and the then added three more in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead.

The Wildcats responded  with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on Schneider's third hit of the game that scored Allie Thompson to bring the hosts to within 4-3.

After a walk to Mallory Williams put runners at first and second, Kataleena Hunt flied out for the second out of the inning.

It appeared BCU would escape with the lead in hand when Haylee McGinty struck out to seemingly end the inning, However, the ball got away from the catcher and McGinty reached first safely. Meanwhile, Sophia Ashby, pinch-running for Schneider raced all the way from second to score the tying run.

In the C-SC seventh, Anquiano doubled with one out and scored on a two-out single by Allie Thompson that brought home the winning run.

C-SC (3-3) is slated to play Hannibal-LaGrange University this Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader at Himsl Field. The first game is set to start at 12 p.m.
