Pitching Rules the Day as Softball Settles for Split with HLGU

Pitching was the order of the day as the Culver-Stockton softball team split a doubleheader with Hannibal-LaGrange University Tuesday afternoon at Himsl Field in Canton, Mo.

In the first game, Emma Roseberry and Makayla Slavik combined on a three-high shutout as the Wildcats prevailed 4-0 over the Trojans. HLGU turned the tables in the nightcap as C-SC was limited to five hits in a 1-0 setback.

Roseberry, the reigning Heart of America Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, was dominant in her four innings of work during the opener. Roseberry allowed just a bunt single and struck out 10 as she faced 13 overall batters. She was credited with the victory.

Slavik entered in the fifth inning and scattered two hits and struck out three in earning a three-ining save, her first of the season.

Offensively the Wildcats struck first with a run in the second inning when Kataleena Hunt doubled with one out and scored on a single by designated player Mallory Williams.

C-SC put the game away in the fourth inning when it plated three runs on three hits and a critical HLG error. Hunt opened the frame with a single and moved to third when Williams, trying to sacrifice, reached on an error.

After Williams stole second, Hunt came home with the Wildcats' second run on a wild pitch. Katelyn Felt then doubled home Williams and Rosa Anquiano singled home Felt with the third run of the inning and the fourth run of the game.

Aquiano led the offensive attack with three hits while Felt and Hunt garnered two hits each in the victory.

In game two, the Trojans scored an unearned run in the fourth inning and it was enough to earn the victory.

HLGU had runners at second and third with two outs in the inning when a groundball hit by Emily Freidank to Baylee Schneider at third. Schneider corralled it but her throw was up the line a bit and Aquianao's glove and Freidank collided, knocking the ball loose for an error.

Kenzie Guilfoyle hurled the first five innings for the Wildcats and was the hard-luck losing pitcher. Guilfoyle allowed three hits, walked one and struck out four in her home debut. Slavik relieved in the sixth and gave up two hits but no runs.

C-SC (4-4) now heads to Florida for spring break where they will play nine games between Mach 5-10. The Wildcats are scheduled to begin play Sunday, March 5, against Roosevelt University in Melbourne, Fla.
