Softball Falls to 1-7 in Florida with Two Losses Thursday

The Culver-Stockton College softball team fell to 1-7 on its spring trip to the USSSA Spring Games with two more losses Thursday in Veira, Fla.

The Wildcats couldn't hold a 4-1 lead in the opening game Thursday and fell to Roosevelt (Ill.) 5-4 in eight innings. In its second game, C-SC was limited to four singles in a 1-0 loss to Saint Francis (Ind.).

Against Roosevelt, the Wildcats used small ball to plate three runs in the second inning.

Rosa Anquiano singled to start the inning and then beat a throw to second when Baylee Schneider reached on a fielder's choice attempting to sacrifice, putting runners at first and second.

Sophia Ashby then successfully sacrificed both Anquiano and Schneidr to second and third, and Madison Covey bunted and reached on a fielder's choice when Anquiano beat the throw to the plate for a 1-0 Wildcat lead.

After Myah Briese fouled out for the second out, Kate Felt dropped a bloop single over shortstop to score Schneider. The ball bounced away from the left fielder, allowing Covey to score all the way from first and C-SC led 3-0.

The Lakers got a run back in the bottom of the inning but the Wildcats grabbed their original three-run lead back in the sixth inning when Anqiano singled and went all the way to third on an error. She eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1 C-SC with is outs to get.

However, Roosevelt scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, once in the seventh to tie the game, and once in the eight to walk off with the victory.

Makayla Slavik suffered the loss after allowing nine hits and five runs (four earned). She struck out two and walked two.

In the second game, Kenzie Guilfoyle scattered six hits, walked one and struck out three. However, an unearned run in the second inning was the only run of the game and it led to a narrow loss.

The Wildcats put a runner at second base in both the first and third inning with one out but failed to drive the run home. In the fourth inning, the first two batters reached for C-SC, but a double play and a groundout ended the threat.

The Wildcats (5-11) conclude its week in Florida Friday, March 10, with two final games. C-SC plays Concordia (Mich.) at 2 p.m. (EST) and Lourdes (Ohio) at 4:30 p.m. (EST).
