Softball Bats Silenced in Doubleheader Loss to Benedictine

The Culver-Stockton softball team managed just four hits in a doubleheader loss to Benedictine College Sunday afternoon at Himsl Field.

The Wildcats registered just one hit in a 10-0 game one loss, and then had three hits in a 5-2 setback to the Ravens in game two.

In the opener, C-SC's Sophia Ashby singled up the middle to open to the bottom of the first inning, but she was erased trying to steal and the Wildcats were set down in order.

In the second inning, Baylee Schneider was hit by a pitch with two out in the inning. Schneider would be the last C-SC player to reach as Raven pitchers Lacey Foster and Bailey Selvage retired the next 10 batters they faced over the final three innings.

Offensively, the Ravens strung together eight straight hits after two wee out to score eight times nt he third inning off C-SC starter Makayla Slavik. Benedictine added two more runs in the fifth inning to end the game early.

In the nightcap, Benedictine pitcher Kara Willoughby retired the first nine hitters she faced as the Ravens took a 4-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fourth.

C-SC finally broke through with a run in the fourth inning and it could have been more if not for some defensive magic by the Ravens.

Katelyn Felt started the inning with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a ground out by Ashby.

With two out, Brylee Throgmorton ripped a single up the middle to soccer Felt for the Wildcats' first run of the afternoon. Alle Thompson them walked to pit runners at first and second when Schneider ripped a line drive destined for right center field. However Raven second baseman Natalie Sheffield spectacular diving catch to end the threat and the inning.

After the Ravens plated a run in the fifth inning to regain their four-run lead, C-SC added a run in the bottom of the inning when Hunter Huddle walked to open the inning, moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Felt's second hit of the game.

Emma Roseberry went the distance for the distance for the Wildcats in the circle, allowing all five runs on nine base hits. She walked two and struck out seven.

C-SC is scheduled to host fourth-ranked Baker University tomorrow, Monday, March 27, in a doubleheader at Himsl Field. First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m.
