Softball Sweeps Home Doubleheader from Iowa Wesleyan

The Culver-Stockton softball team used different avenues to sweep a non-conference doubleheader from Iowa Wesleyan University Thursday afternoon at Himsl Field.

The Wildcats won a pitcher's duel in the opener, prevailing 2-1 over the Tigers. In game two, C-SC scored seven times in the fourth inning and routed the Tigers 10-1 in five innings.

Emma Roseberry controlled game one from the circle, allowing the visitors four hits in the game but also fanning 10 IWU batters. She allowed one run and did not walk a batter.

The Wildcats broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when Haylee McGinty began the frame with a bunt single and Sophia Ashby reached on an error trying to sacrifice.

Selina Guzman followed by sacrificing both runners up one base, and then Brylee Throgmorton executed a perfect squeeze bunt to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

After the Tigers tied the game in the fourth inning, Ashby drilled a one-out, go-ahead solo home run in the fifth inning to give the Wildcats the victory.

In game two, the Wildcats and Tigers were knotted at one in the fourth inning when things went off the rails for Iowa Wesleyan. The Wildcats collected six hits in the inning and took advantage of two crucial Tiger errors to plate seven runs and take a commanding 8-1 lead.

Ashby delivered a two-run homer in the inning and Myah Briese added a two-run single to lead the offense.

Briese continued her fine day in the fifth inning when she ended the game with the run rule by collecting a two-run double to score Schneider and Kataleena Hunt. Briese finished with four runs batted in, while Ashby and Hunt scored two runs in the game.

C-SC (8-18) is slated to return to conference action this Saturday, April 1, with a doubleheader at Park University in Parkville, Mo. Game time for the first game is set for 1 p.m.
