First Inning Outburst Helps Softball 'Cats Earn Split with Mount Mercy

A six-run outburst in the first inning was enough to earn the Culver-Stockton softball team a split with North Division-leading Mount Mercy University Saturday afternoon at Himsl Field.

The Wildcats, who totaled three hits in a 6-0 loss in the opener, banged out 10 hits in a 9-4 victory in the nightcap.

C-SC fell behind 3-0 in game two but responded with six runs of its own, highlighted by Haylee McGinty's three-run homer. The home run was McGinty's second home run in as many days.

Kataleena Hunt also delivered a RBI single in the inning, while Hunter Huddle drew a bases loaded walk, and Myah Briese hit a sacrifice fly.

The Wildcats added another run in the second inning as Hunt and Rosa Anquiano singled to begin the inning. Brylee Throgmorton reached on an error to load the bases, and a wild pitch allowed a run to score.

Alle Thompson drove in a run in the fifth inning on a groundout and Hunt scored on another wild pitch in the sixth inning to account for the Wildcat scoring.

Hunt finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI, while Sophia Ashby and Anquiano collected two hits each.

Emma Roseberry improved to 7-8 on the season with a complete-game victory. Roseberry allowed eight hits and four earned runs while walking two and striking out seven.

In the opener the Mustangs plated four runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth to capture the victory.

Hunt, Ashby and Anquiano all posted one hit each.

The Wildcats, now 12-24 overall and 5-9 in the Heart, return to action this Friday, April 14, with a doubleheader against MidAmerica Nazarene University at Himsl Field. Game one is slated to start at 1 p.m.
