Softball Splits Home Doubleheader with MidAmerica Nazarene to Start Weekend

The Culver-Stockton softball team began a four-game weekend homestand with a split against MidAmerica Nazarene University Friday afternoon at Himsl Field.

The Wildcats would score all the runs they would need in the first two innings to capture the opener 4-2 behind the pitching of Makayla Slavik. In the nightcap, the Pioneers plated three runs in the seventh inning to defeat C-SC 3-1.

After MNU had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one, the Wildcats answered in the bottom half of the opening frame with three runs of their own.

Leadoff hitter Sophia Ashby hit the first pitch she saw for double, and second place hitter Kataleena Hunt followed suit by smacking the first pitch thrown to her for a single and a run batted in to tie the game.

After Brylee Throgmorton line out and Katelyn Felt hit into a fielder's choice, erasing Hunt on the bases, Alle Thompson doubled home Felt to give the hosts a 2-1 lead. Thompson advanced to third when Baylee Schneider reached on an error, and scored when she crossed home plate before Schneider was tagged out in a run down.

In the second inning, Haylee McGinty walked and moved to second on a single by Madison Covey. Both runners were sacrificed to second and third by Selina Guzman before Ashby hit a fly ball in foul territory down the left field line. MNU left fielder Londin Fiorella made the catch, but that allowed McGinty to tag and score C-SC's fourth run of the game.

Slavik took over from there, allowing just one more run over the next five inning to earn her four victory of the season. Slavik scattered eight hits, allowed two unearned runs, walked two and struck out one to earn her first victory since April 1 at Park.

In the nightcap, the game was scoreless through the first three innings before the Wildcats broke through for a run in the fourth inning.

Thompson led the inning with a single, was sacrificed to second by Schneider, and scored on a one-out double by McGinty.

Roseberry was cruising along until trouble surfaced in the seventh inning. A leadoff double, a passed ball, a walk, and a sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1.

An infield single put runners at first and second, bit Roseberry struck out Pioneer leadoff hitter Cordelia Hanger for the second out of the inning. However, a two-out single allowed the go-ahead to score and then, while the Wildcats were standing around, MNU stole a third run because Roseberry wasn't in the pitching circle.

The Wildcats put two runners on base in the seventh when Ashby walked, and Throgmorton reached on an error. But Felt grounded out on a check swing to third base to end the game.

Thompson led the offense with three hits in the two games, including two doubles. Ashby collected two hits in the game.

The Wildcats are scheduled to host Evangel University in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 15. The game time for the first game has been pushed up to 12 p.m. to try and beat potential inclement weather that is expected to hit the Canton area late Saturday afternoon. C-SC will recognize its six seniors between games in a Senior Day ceremony.
